Posture is often something that’s put on the back burner when you’re looking at working on your health, but you should know that your posture impacts your physical health significantly. Good posture can have you feeling much better in all situations, whether you’re relaxing and sitting around at home, or being out and about. Bad posture, on the other hand, has many negatives and could lead to serious issues.
Unfortunately, most people don’t know what things they are doing that could be damaging their posture. Listed below are 3 potential ways you could be harming it.
#1 Being Sedentary
There’s nothing wrong with sitting down to watch a movie for a few hours, but you should never stay completely still for too long. If you sit for too long, your core will not be engaged, and your core is extremely important in order to maintain a healthy posture.
To do this, you can try standing up every hour on the hour, and walking around for 10 to 15 minutes to give your body a good sense of movement. If you are unable to do this, at least make sure you’re not sitting completely still for long periods of time. If at all possible, include a daily aerobic exercise that activates your core muscles. This will help you maintain a decent level of health for your posture.
In the old days, women were sent to charm school and boys learned proper posture in their schools. Today, this is not so. Posture is no longer a main stream lesson for any child.
As a result, many people slouch, unknowing of how terrible this is on the body. Slouching can cause all sorts of medical issues including but not limited to back pain, spinal dysfunction, and joint degeneration.
While slouching may not be an issue for you now, once it’s had a negative impact on your posture, it can make it hard to sit or even stand comfortably. Once you’re misaligned, you may need to visit an expert like a chiropractor to get your posture sorted.
#3 Using Improper Office Equipment
Working in an office is not a dangerous line of work, but it still has its hazards that you should be aware of. One main thing to be concerned about here is your posture. If your office chair, computer, or desk do not allow for good posture while working, you are going to experience significant pain as you continue in that line of work.
One way of knowing for sure if your office equipment will affect you is to check to see whether or not you are sitting properly in your chair, and if your keyboard isn’t at the right height. These two things alone could cause you to experience various wrist, back, and neck issues.
It can be just as problematic if you decide to work from your couch instead. With so many people starting to work from home now, there are plenty who are experiencing new posture issues. And while working from the couch is all too tempting, you should do your best to avoid it. Most couches won’t offer the shape required to encourage good back or neck health, and it can lead to aches and pains over time. So, be sure to invest in appropriate equipment for your home office.
Though your lifestyle is a clear indicator as to why you may be experiencing bad posture, there is still time to fix the kind of damage you are causing. Use your core muscles more frequently, switch out that office chair for a yoga chair, and wear a posture corrector. These tips, though small, can make a huge difference on your posture and your physical health.
