As a mother of four, I am always on the hunt for the best things to do with kids, and this year, I took them to see the Harlem Globetrotters! Let me tell you, your kids will love to watch them! #1 No one does basketball tricks like the Harlem Globetrotters!
We’ve never seen anything like this! Sure, we have watched basketball games before, but the Harlem Globetrotters make basketball look so much more fun. They were rolling the ball around their bodies, over their shoulders, behind their necks, bouncing it between their legs, through other players’ legs, and the tricks kept coming! Not to mention, the slam dunks were seamless, looked effortless, and down right legendary!
Our seats were super close so we got to see court side conversations, up-close dances, the celebrities join the fun, and so much more! For the fans who weren’t as close as we were, the show was just as good because the giant screen in the middle of the court showed everyone what was going on. There was not one person in that entire venue who wasn’t loving every second of it.
#2 Grandmama is hilarious!
Before this event, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an adorable little old lady so vocal about basketball, teasing the players and the ref, or even play so well. Obviously, Grandmama is more of a state of mind than an actual person, and she was great at fulfilling her duty to the crow. With her sharp whit, hilarious rhetoric, and humorous wobble on and off the court, her show was just as amazing as the players themselves!
She first rolled onto the court using her walker, wearing a version of the uniform, and shouting to everyone on and off the court. She shouted her humor at all of us. She gave everyone a piece of her mind. And she was a strong character with anyone who dared play with her. Her performance was truly impeccable! We all thought she was just a quick sidebar to the main show, but then she went into this small changing hut, and poof! She wasn’t old anymore. She turned into a trick-savvy game player just like the rest of the team players. And here game was sick!
#3 There are celebrity guests.
I don’t want to spoil anyone’s secret, but there were one or two celebrities who showed up while we were there. First, Tracy Morgan showed up. Then, to my two teen daughters’ celebrity crush appeared. It was Spider-Man. Let me tell you, I never saw two girls blush as much as they did!
Spider-Man was on the top of the basketball net, messing with the players. And of course, he did his nifty in-air tricks as well. And while one would have thought that these were distractions from what was happening on the court, we didn’t care. It was a show, a real show! And we couldn’t get enough of it.
#4 The fans are loyal and super friendly.
Let me tell you, I have been to some basketball games. The fans are extremely loyal to their respective teams. And yes, I have even seen some not-so-chivalrous activity between fans. But here, the fans of the Harlem Globetrotters were so welcoming. They made jokes with us, laughed with us, and were so darn polite, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for their presence.
As an added bonus, whenever we didn’t know a player’s name or anything else (it was our first time ever), the fans near us would help us get to know the team better. It was like being welcomed to a family, and that was truly a new experience for us.
#5 The Harlem Globetrotters music is phenomenal!
Okay, I am not gonna lie. The music was heart-pumping and I felt like I was in a hip-hop music video, but the kind where all the music was fun, energy enhancing, and selected just for me. I’m pretty sure that every fan there felt the same as I did.
You couldn’t look around that venue and see one person not dancing to the musical selections. The DJ was unbelievable from mixing it up, to his scratching, and down to his choices. As if the show itself wasn’t enough to get you to say, “Let’s do it again!”, then the music sure was!

My family and I are pretty large, compared to today’s standards. We are after all, a family of 6.
